Biography

John Ned Kelly is a self-taught acrylic painter based in Ellenbrook, Western Australia, originally from Quairading. His work explores the spirit of the Australian landscape, from outback horizons to romantic interpretations of rural life, capturing both its beauty and its rawness.
Represented by Birli Gallery, Midland and widely exhibited across WA, Kelly has been recognised with multiple awards, spanning People’s Choice to First Prize honours . His paintings are known for their vibrant storytelling and emotional depth, stemming from a practice grounded in a deep connection to place and memory, where colour and texture become tools for evoking a sense of belonging and history.
Through his art, Ned invites viewers to see the familiar in new ways and to find poetry in the land and meaning in its silences.
For exhibition opportunities, private viewings or corporate acquisitions, Ned welcomes connection and collaboration with collectors, curators, and industry professionals who share an appreciation for authentic, place-driven Australian art.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How long does it take to paint a painting? A. That's too hard to answer as I can have 5 or more on the go at any time.
Q. How long have you been painting? A. This time around I started in 2018 when I retired from work, and won't stop until I drop!
Q. Have you been a stockman? A. No, but I was raised on a farm so I have a good understanding of what it would be like, and appreciate the skillmanship they display.
Q. Have you been up North? A. Yes, but not to all the places I would like to go to as yet.
Q. Can you lower the price? A Depends on who you are, how you ask the question, what mood I am in, and what piece of art we are talking about, but the short answer is probably not.
Q. What medium do you use? A. I have tried oils, colored pencils, water paints, pastels, and gouache but then I found acrylic paint and that was it for me.
Q. Is Ned your real name? A. It is now! It started as a nickname years ago, but as I never did like John and don't see myself as John. Please call me Ned
Q. Where is your gallery? A. I have a home gallery. It's open by appointment and also when I am doing Open Studios/Art Trails. You can also see my work at Birli Gallery in Midland.
